And I, along with so many Top Gun fans, which is basically everybody, ALSO feel the need for this sequel! Luckily for all of us, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 1986 military drama, Top Gun, feels closer than ever. Tom Cruise posted the first look at Top Gun: Maverick on his Instagram, sending fans into total excitement… naturally.
Cruise will reprise his role as Lieutenant Pete Maverick Mitchell, as shown in the image, which he captioned #Day1.” In the pic, Cruise is seen looking back at his F-14A Tomcat, with his Maverick helmet in hand. The photo also includes the iconic tagline “Feel the Need.” For Speed. Obviously. At this time, no other cast members have been released, but we do know that Jerry Bruckheimer is producing through his company, Jerry Bruckheimer for Paramount Pictures. The sequel also reunites Tom Cruise with his Oblivion director, Joseph Kosinski.
The original pic was selected for the National Film registry by the United States Library of Congress, so the pressure’s on for the sequel. Let’s be real, though, something tells me we won’t be disappointed.
Right now, Top Gun: Maverick holds onto it’s July 2019 release, falling right in between the releases of the sequel to Marvel’s Spiderman: Homecoming and Disney’s LIVE adaptation of The Lion King… Sooo, basically we know what we’re doing next July. And if you can’t wait to see Cruise return to Top Gun, his return to Mission Impossible is right around the corner, with the 6th Mission Impossible movie, subtitled Fallout dropping in theatres this July.
