The Miss America Organization has been around since 1921, but Miss America 2.0 will make its debut in September of this year. Gretchen Carlson, the chair of the Board of Trustees, and former Miss America sat down with Good Morning America this morning to tell us about all the new changes and why. She said QUOTE, “We are no longer a pageant. We are a competition.” The biggest change is that instead of the swimsuit portion, the contestants will now interact with the judges live and according to ABC News they will be asked to QUOTE “demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America.” They’re not only getting rid of the swimsuits though, they’re also getting rid of the evening gown portion and encouraging the contestants to wear outfits that show their personal style!

One of the reasons for this change is to be a more inclusive organization. She said in her interview that “We’ve heard from a lot of young women who say, ‘We’d love to be a part of your program but we don’t want to be out there in high heels and a swimsuit,’ so guess what, you don’t have to do that anymore. Who doesn’t want to be empowered, learn leadership skills and pay for college and be able to show the world who you are as a person from the inside of your soul.”
That’s what we’re judging them on now.”

The Miss America organization has had some controversy recently when some internal emails were leaked that were insulting former Miss America winners. Gretchen Carlson was one of the former winners that was insulted and CEO Sam Haskell, chairman Lynn Weidner and president and COO Josh Randle all resigned as a result. Gretchen replaced Sam Haskell and back in 2016 settled a major sexual harrasment lawsuit against former Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes. The leadership team at Miss America is all female now and when wrapping up, Gretchen stated that “This is a new beginning and change can sometimes be difficult but I know a lot about change. My life has worked in mysterious ways. I never thought I’d be the chairwoman of the Miss America Organization, but here I am and we’re moving it forward and we’re evolving in this cultural revolution.”

Tune in to the 2019 Miss America Competition when it airs live on ABC Sunday Sept 9, at 9PM!
