The 12 episode series, set to drop August 10th, is about a high schooler, played by Debby Ryan, who gets bullied because of her weight. In the show, her character gets punched in the face and spends the summer with her jaw wired shut. When she comes back, she is thin and seen as conventionally attractive by the peers who once bullied her. Instead of becoming their friends, she seeks revenge on them.

Naturally, this show has already received a ton of backlash over the message of the show.

One user tweeted QUOTE “this is a good example of why i grew up insecure and thought i would never be loved because of my size. give us a story where the fat girl stays fat, struggles, but learns to accept her body and overcomes societal standards. #insatiable”

While another user said QUOTE “it could have been a story of self love and learning to love your body as it is, and then choosing to push forward and better yourself and enduring further teasing at gyms but still pushing forward and doing it for yourself and no one else but nooooo let’s wire her mouth shut yep”

But not everyone is hating on this. This user defended the movie saying QUOTE “when do trailers ever really show the true plot twist-filled message and theme of a show/movie? people are so quick to judge that this is going to have a bad and negative outcome with body shaming. just wait until it comes out and then we can see if it’s bad.”

After the backlash, Debby Ryan tweeted a screenshot of a Teen Vogue article about the show and highlighted the segment that said QUOTE, “When she returns to school, everyone’s stunned by her physical change. Problematic? You bet. After all, if someone’s treatment of you is rooted in how your body looks, that says a lot about them, not you. Attuned to that, Patty sets out on a quest to make everyone pay for how they treated her (even if you really should just let karma deal with the wrongdoers in its good, sweet time).”

Another star of the film is Alyssa Milano who played Patty’s mom. In response to her tweet of the trailer, one fan said QUOTE, “Really…..so she wasn’t able to take revenge until she was “conventionally attractive”? This is disgusting! You are the face of the Women’s Movement and THIS? Shame on you!”

She quote tweeted that and responded QUOTE, “We are not shaming Patty. We are addressing (through comedy) the damage that occurs from fat shaming. I hope that clears it up. Also, this article does a good job of explaining it more:” with a link to the same Teen Vogue article that Debby referenced.
