The BET Awards is a celebration of black excellence honoring artists, actors, humanitarians and more, but not everyone can be a winner! Obviously getting nominated is an accomplishment in it’s own right, but you’re here to find out who took home the biggest awards.
The first award of the night went to DJ Khaled who accepted the award for Best Collaboration for his collab with Rihanna & Bryson Tiller on Wild Thoughts. In his speech, he thanked God for blessing him with his son Asahd who he took on stage with him. SZA took home the award for Best New Artist and inspired us all.
She was so cute in her speech, but I want to know what she came back to say to everybody at the end. Anyway, Beyoncé took home the award for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist Award and Bruno Mars won for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. The Migos ended up taking home the award for Best Group. During their speech they thanked a few people, but what Offset said at the end of the thank you speech is what everyone is talking about.
Although Cardi B was heavily nominated in multiple categories sometimes twice in on category, she ultimately took home two awards for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and the Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award for Bodak Yellow. She wasn’t there to accept in person, but she’s also very busy and very pregnant right now. She did take to Instagram to say thank you to BET and all her fans. Kendrick Lamar won two awards as well for Best Male Hip Hop Artist Award and Album of the Year for Damn and Drake won for Video of the Year with his “God’s Plan” video.
Now there were some winners in the acting categories too. Black Panther, which is the third highest grossing film of all time domestically, won the award for Best Movie. Director Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan accepted the award, but what Ryan said during his speech really moved me.
Chadwick Boseman won for Best Actor and Tiffany Haddish took home the award for Best Actress getting a little emotional during her acceptance speech.
Some other extremely notable awards include Anita Baker who received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Debra Lee who was awarded the Ultimate Icon Award. Although I love all these categories, ,my favorite awards of the night went to James Shaw Jr., Anthony Borges, Justin Blackman, Mamoudou Gassama, Naomi Wadler, & Shaun King who all received the Humanitarian Award for being heroes in their own right.
